Foodbank Exceedingly Low on Donated Food
Community Food and Fund Drives Needed
Norfolk, VA — The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia is extremely low on donated food this season. Summer is traditionally a time of year when the Foodbank sees a drop in donations because people aren’t holding food drives and thinking about feeding hungry people, but this year is especially troublesome. Usually in July and August the Foodbank can supplement the low donation flow with donated salvaged items from manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers; but this year those items aren't available. To purchase the amount of canned food needed for August would wipe out the budget for food purchases for the rest of the year. The items most needed right now are nonperishable canned food and dry goods.
"We're lower on food this summer than last," says Marianne Smith, Chief Development Officer for the Foodbank, "the necessity for canned food is tremendous - an additional 300,000 pounds is needed to meet the demand in August alone." The Foodbank distributes about 250,000 pounds of food every week. "Everyone thinks of food drives at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but we need to feed hungry people every day."
