Once the cans are collected, all you do is check the expiration date, discard ones that have expired or that are damaged, and then put them in bags marked "Just One Can" event. You would then drop them off at the Foodbank in Norfolk, or at one of their drop off spots listed on their website. If you have over 500 pounds, the Foodbank will pick up, but it is costly for them to do so. If you are a Just One Can participant, many events during the year could become Just One Can events (ie: back yard family picnics, birthday parties, and football parties). If you have a guest that forgets to bring a can, simply have a large clean can/container available for contributions of cash or checks. While this is a very simple idea, with so many people going hungry the Foodbank needs help all year long. Many of you may already arrange food drives, and the Foodbank has many wonderful events during the year, but can you imagine if at the events you host, everyone brought Just One Can of food? Can you imagine this spreading around the city, state, and eventually around the country? If people adopted this program for their many business, community or family events, it would be amazing how much food would be collected. You can make a difference - One Can at a time! |
