Make a Difference for Hunger Action Month

Hunger Action Month kicks off every September, rallying communities nationwide to combat hunger and food insecurity.

More than just a month-long event, it’s a call to action for individuals and families to come together in the fight against hunger. Efforts both big and small will bridge the food gap. And ensure that no one in our community goes to bed with an empty stomach.

The Hunger Crisis: A Closer Look

According to the US Department of Agriculture, a staggering 13 million households across the United States grappled with food insecurity at some point in 2021. In 2022, that number rose to 44 million people, meaning 1 in 7 people experienced food insecurity. While hunger is a national crisis, its impact is deeply felt locally.

Across the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore’s service area, more than 132,240 individuals are projected to face food insecurity. In some areas we serve, one in four children go to bed hungry each night. These numbers aren’t just figures; they represent our neighbors, colleagues, and fellow community members struggling to put food on the table.

Our Efforts

During Hunger Action Month, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore expands our efforts to meet this increased demand for food assistance. Through programs, facilities, strategic partnerships with local organizations, and an army of dedicated volunteers, the Foodbank ensures that nutritious food reaches those who need it most.

One of the Foodbank’s most impactful initiatives is the mobile food pantry service. Mobile pantry food banks are a game-changer in addressing food insecurity. This program offers flexible, accessible, and dignified food options for those in need by bringing nutritious meals directly to underserved areas.

Crushing Hunger Together

Fill Hearts and Pantries

One of the most direct ways to contribute is by volunteering your time and energy. From organizing food drives to sorting and packing food for distribution, every hour of volunteer work translates into meals for those in need. Here are ways you can volunteer your time:

Mobile Food Pantry Service Program: Unload the mobile pantry truck and distribute pre-packaged food.

Quality Assurance: Sort non-perishable food items, pack food for the mobile pantry, and prepare youth-friendly food bags.

Special Events: Assist with fundraising events, including food drives.

Youth and Family Nights: Engage families with children in sorting or packing food and learning about the Foodbank’s work.

Fuel the Fight Against Hunger

While time is a precious resource, monetary and food donations are the bread and butter of hunger relief efforts. Your financial support amplifies our ability to acquire fresh produce, dairy, and protein – items that are less commonly donated but critically important for a balanced diet. Donate online through September 30, and Navy Federal Credit Union will match each donation, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.

For those who prefer to make a food donation, non-perishable goods such as canned vegetables, pasta, rice, and peanut butter are always in high demand.

Amplify the Message

By advocating for Foodbank during this hunger awareness month, you’re amplifying the urgent needs of our hungry neighbors. Your voice can help shatter misconceptions about hunger and rally support for critical solutions. With your help, we’ll influence policymakers, secure vital resources, and champion equitable access to nutrition.

Hungry for Action

Hunger Action Month is packed with special events to inspire community support and raise awareness. Make every day of the month count with simple and powerful ways to help create an America where no one goes hungry.
