The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore received a $60,000 gift from Virginia Beach-based real estate company, Armada Hoffler Properties, Inc. (NYSE: AHH) to support this year’s Hunger Heroes Corporate Food Frenzy and Summer of Service – an initiative aimed at raising food and funds to help feed those in our community facing food insecurity.

“After reading The Virginian Pilot’s recent article about the impact the Farm Fresh closures will have on the Foodbank’s ability to meet the needs of hungry children this summer, Dan Hoffler and I were even more motivated to support this initiative,” said Louis Haddad, CEO of Armada Hoffler. “We are hoping that our gift will challenge other businesses to leverage their resources and rally behind such critical hunger relief efforts.”

“We are grateful for the support of Armada Hoffler, and other early adopters of this summer-driven campaign,” said Ruth Jones Nichols, CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. “

From May 21 through June 9, companies have been asked to participate in a friendly competition – earning points by collecting monetary and food donations for the Foodbank. Early adopters include Jo-Kell, MacArthur Center, the Nicholson AAAA Charitable Foundation, and Safelite Auto Glass, which have committed to donating $2,000 – totaling approximately 6,000 meals. In addition, Food Lion kicked off the campaign with $2,000 in food donations.

“The Hunger Heroes Corporate Food Frenzy is designed to galvanize the business community around eliminating hunger,” said Suzy Kelly, CEO of Jo-Kell and Honorary Chair of the Hunger Heroes Corporate Food Frenzy & Summer of Service. “We are excited about the corporations that have partnered with us in this initiative, and look forward to seeing their contributions translate into meals for those who need them most.”

Armada Hoffler’s $60,000 donation will help the Foodbank meet its initial goal to raise 180,000 meals to for children and families in Hampton Roads. To help build momentum and increase the number of meals provided for children this summer, the Virginia Beach-based real estate developer will also encourage local businesses to match the gift dollar for dollar as part of the campaign. With one dollar, the Foodbank is able to provide three meals.

Without the support from Farm Fresh this summer, the Foodbank will lose approximately 312,500 meals provided to children from June through August – the equivalent of 375,000 pounds of healthy, nutritious food. Through the Hunger Heroes Corporate Food Frenzy, the Foodbank hopes to fill this impending gap.
